(500) Days of Summer (PG-13)
Not a romantic comedy, but rather a roller coaster ride of emotional ups and downs, this movie is sure to strike home with anyone who has ever been in, and out, of love. Young, romantic, sensitive Tom Hanson (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is searching for his soul mate. A greeting card writer, he is in touch with his inner feelings and those of his readers. Fate intervenes and his new co-worker Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) appears to be the answer to his dreams. Sadly, his illusion of the perfect relationship is sadly distorted over the 500 days that he and Summer share. To add to the quirky feel of the film, the days do not real themselves to the audience in any particular order, so watch the numbers.
The special features are limited but those included are above average. An audio commentary between director Mark Webb and Joseph Gordon-Levitt proves to be quite interesting. Deleted and extended scenes are also included on the home edition.
A pleasant surprise and a breath of fresh air when compared to other romantic comedies of 2009, 500 Days is well worth watching.
