Crown Candy Kitchen
by Marian Rein

More than 18 years ago, I had an egg salad sandwich and a chocolate milkshake at Crown Candy Kitchen, located in downtown St. Louis. Nothing’s changed about the food or the establishment since that time. It’s fantastic. While 18 years in business might seem impressive for a restaurant (these days, if a restaurant has been around for more than a couple of years, it’s considered a hit), what’s really impressive is that Crown Candy Kitchen has been in business since 1918! That’s 92 years!

Think about it — where do you go when you want a truly nostalgic experience, great food and good prices? There’s only one place that comes to mind — Crown Candy Kitchen. And I’m not the only one who was thinking about great food and nostalgia on a Saturday night — the place was packed with families, little kids, as well as a group of young men who looked as though they were having a pre-hockey game meal! Seems that Crown Candy Kitchen appeals to people of all ages.

During my more recent visit in January, my meal began with a cherry marshmallow malt — that’s right, began! My son, Sam, and I shared it, enough for more than two full glasses. And I finished it before my roast beef sandwich arrived. I just couldn’t restrain myself. Crown Candy makes their own ice cream, and it produces delicious ice cream treats.

Now, about the roast beef sandwich — it was piled high with thickly sliced beef that was extremely flavorful and served on a soft roll. And that’s about it! Simple. Wonderful.

Sam had the roast beef cheddar melt — same great beef but served on toast with melted cheddar cheese.

About the young men sitting behind us — one of them ordered a BLT. I would have to say that I’ve never seen a BLT loaded with as much bacon as the one I saw at Crown Candy.

Whether you’re five years old or one-hundred and five, you’ll enjoy Crown Candy Kitchen.

Oh, did I mention there’s candy?

Sweet!
